ABOUT OUR SHEETS

What is a waterproof sheet?

It’s a fitted sheet with a waterproof layer built in.

Instead of using a separate mattress protector underneath, everything is combined into one. So it looks and feels like a regular sheet — just a lot more practical.

How is it waterproof?

We use a very thin waterproof layer called PUL (polyurethane laminate).

It's a thin, flexible membrane just 0.02mm thick (less than half the width of a human hair). We laminate this film to fabric layer to stablise it. Then we sew this layer into the back of our organic cotton sheet.

PUL is the same material used in modern cloth nappies and medical-grade textiles. It's flexible, soft, and BPA-free.

Importantly: our PUL is the highest grade on the market, which means our sheets can be washed and dried like a regular sheet (more on that below).

Are waterproof sheets breathable?

Short answer: “breathable” isn’t what keeps babies safe, the latest safe sleep recommendations are focusing on rebreathing safety instead.

“Breathable” gets thrown around a lot in baby products, but it’s not a regulated safety term. It usually refers to how a fabric handles heat and moisture — not whether exhaled air can safely disperse.

When it comes to sleep products, what actually matters is how the product absorbs or disperses carbon dioxide (CO₂).

Our sheets are independently tested to for CO₂ permeability.

Here’s how they’re designed with that in mind:

  • The waterproof layer prevents exhaled air (with higher CO₂ levels) from being absorbed into the mattress and pooling.
  • Instead, the exhaled air stays at the surface and disperses into the room
  • The low profile waterproof layer sits discreetly under the sheet fabric with no excess padding between layers, keeping the surface firm to assist babies to reposition independently when needed.

So while the material itself is less air-permeable than plain cotton, the overall design supports a safer sleep surface.

Will waterproof sheets make my baby overheat?

Short answer: no — not on their own.

In practice, your baby’s temperature is impacted far more by making adjustments to their clothing, sleeping bags, the room temperature and ventilation, rather than the sheet they’re sleeping on.

Our sheets are made with a thick woven cotton top layer — the part your baby is actually lying on. Underneath that is a very thin waterproof layer, which doesn’t sit against their skin.

So while “waterproof” can sound like it might trap heat, in reality, it’s not what primarily drives overheating.

What does matter more — and what we’ve prioritised in our design — is reducing rebreathing risk, maintaining mattress firmness safety and hygiene.

The waterproof layer helps prevent liquids from soaking into the mattress maintaining a more hygienic sleep surface and it creates a barrier to dust mites and allergens.

Most importantly it plays a crucial role in how exhaled air behaves at the sleep surface — keeping it on the surface where it can disperse, rather than being absorbed and retained into the mattress, increasing the carbon dioxide levels around a sleeping infant.

By reducing rebreathing risk with a waterproof sheet, and managing temperature through clothing and room conditions, you can create a safer sleep environment for your baby.

Are they safe for babies?

Yes — and this is something we take seriously.

Our sheets are INPAA approved (independently tested to Australian safe sleeping standards) and also tested to meet the new CO2 rebreathing standards.

The PUL layer contains no BPAs, no PVC, no flame retardants.

For safe sleep more broadly, we follow the bedding recommendations provided by Raising Children's Network which includes sleeping babies on a firm mattress, with no extra layers of padding added to the sheet that might interfere with the firmness of the surface.

Raising Children's Network is free resource backed by the Australian Government that provides the independent, up to date, evidence based recommendations for safe sleeping.

You can find information about the Australian Standards for safe mattresses & cots here.

Even if you don't buy our sheets, we recommend checking this wonderful resource out.

What are the sheets made from?

The part your baby sleeps on is 100% GOTS organic cotton — thick, soft and like a real sheet.

Underneath, there’s a thin waterproof layer (PUL) bonded to a fabric backing. It’s the same material used in modern cloth nappies and medical-grade textiles, and it's OEKO TEX-100 Certified.

So you get the comfort of cotton, with the practicality of waterproof built in.

Do they feel like plastic?

No — and this is where most waterproof bedding gets it wrong.

Our top layer is thick, soft cotton, so it feels like a proper fitted sheet.

The waterproof layer underneath is ultra-thin and flexible, so there’s no crunching, no stiffness, no plastic feel.

What if I don't like them?

No hard feelings. If they’re not right for you, you can return them — check our returns page for the details.

Do I still need a mattress protector?

No, that's the whole point.

Our sheets are an all-in-one. The waterproof layer is built into the back of every fitted sheet, so you don't need a separate mattress protector underneath. One sheet and you're done.

SIZING & CARE

How do I find the right size for my bassinet, co-sleeper or cot?

Honestly? Sizing can be the most confusing part of buying a sheet.

Different brands, different measurements, different terms — it's a lot.

So we've made it simple

  • We have the sheet dimensions listed on every product page. Match them to your mattress within 1-2cm, and you're sorted.
  • If numbers aren't your thing, use our Size Tool to find your perfect fit. Tell it the brand and model of your bassinet or cot and it'll do the matching for you.

If our size tool doesn't have your specific bassinet, no stress — it'll send your details straight through to us and a real human will come back with a recommendation.

We're pretty good at getting sizing right. It's kind of our thing.

How many sheets do I need?

We recommend a minimum of two sheets, but three is best.

Two sheets on the bed, one in the wash or one spare.

Pro tip: layer two sheets on the mattress. If there’s an overnight accident, just peel one off and you’re done.

How do I wash them?

Our sheets can be washed with your regular laundry with the following tips in mind.

  • Wash prior to use with similar colours
  • Machine wash at or below 60˚C /140˚F
  • Line dry in shade or tumble dry on low heat/delicate setting
  • Do not iron
  • Do not dry-clean
  • Do not bleach or use stain removal sprays
  • Do not soak
  • Do not pierce fabric

Little Human® Linens sheets are designed to make your life easier. We have worked hard to source the best polyurethane laminate that can that can withstand frequent washing, while remaining waterproof and beautifully soft.

Direct exposure to very high heat, harsh chemicals or sharp objects will damage the polyurethane laminate resulting in de-lamination or hardening of the PUL and shrinkage of the cotton.

We use organic cotton and organic dyes, as a result some fading of dark colours is considered normal.

Can I put them in the dryer?

Yes — on a low heat only.

Our sheets are designed for real life, so they’re completely tumble dryer friendly on a delicate/gentle/low heat setting.

Just skip high heat in the dryer — that’s what can damage the waterproof layer.

Hot wash? Totally fin up to 60 degrees.
Hot dryer? No thanks - keep it low/gentle/cool.

Are they durable?

Yes — they’re made to handle real life.

We spent years developing them, and our original prototypes are still going strong years later (after being tested on actual kids).

They’re designed to be washed, dried, and reused — over and over again.

Restock dates are listed on each product page where available.

Because our prints are custom-made, restocks can take several weeks from reorder to arrival.

Do you make bigger sizes for single, king single, double, queen or king beds?

Right now, our range covers small bassinets through to European cots — newborn up to around 3–4 years.

Our bigger kid range (single and king single) is coming back, improved.

You can join the waitlist to be the first to know when it lands.Double, queen and king sizes are also on the roadmap.

Do you make flat sheets, pillowcases, or doona covers?

We don't make flat sheets for our newborn or infant ranges (Small Bassinet through European Cot) — for safe sleep, an age-appropriate swaddle or sleeping bag is recommended over a flat sheet or blanket.

Pillowcases & flat sheets will return for our biggers sizes - get on our sign up list to be first in the know.

Doona covers aren't part of our range right now, but they're frequently requested and we hear you. Current wateproof doona covers, when used in combination with a waterproof fitted sheet, simply don't allow enough ventilation and can lead to overheating - so currenly we don't recommend them.Sign up to our newsletter and you'll be the first to know if they ever land.
